Welcome Back!

Energy and Heating/Cooling - we reviewed the LOL diagrams for Eth and Eph in class.  Be sure that you understand the differences in energy storage and energy transfer.  Today, we introduced heat capacity, heat of fusion, and heat of vaporization.  These values have been determined for water and many other substances through experiments.

Energy transferred during temperature change (matter in a single phase):
Heat capacity of ice: 2.1J/1g*1 degree C
Heat capacity of liquid water: 4.18J/1g*1 degree C

Energy transferred during phase change:
Heat of fusion of water (melting-freezing): 334J/g
Heat of vaporization of water (evaporation-condensation): 2260J/g

HW: Complete problems 1-5 on Worksheet 3 - Quantitative Energy Problems.  Be prepared to whiteboard and explain in class tomorrow.
