LAB: Mass and Change Parts 1-3

HW: In your journal, summarize the findings of the first three parts of the lab - steel wool, ice and water, and formation of a precipitate. Use the instructions and questions below to guide your journal entries. Be sure to focus on your particle drawings while keeping in mind the types of particles, the distance between particles, as well as the state(s) of matter.  We have talked about the best ways to represent "little lumps" of matter (molecules) in our drawings - open circles, closed circles, x's, various sizes of dots/circles, different colors, etc...

Lab: Mass and Change – SIX PARTS

Part 1 – Mass of steel wool
Journal entry
• Draw a diagram to illustrate the change in volume and the change in mass.
• Display the entire class data set graphically.
QUESTION: Did the change in volume affect the mass?

Part 2 – Mass of ice and water
Journal entry
• Draw a diagram to represent the particles of water in the solid and then liquid states. Make sure that the diagram illustrates the change in volume and the change in mass.
QUESTIONS: Did the change in volume affect the mass?  Did the change in the state of matter affect the mass?

Part 3 – Mass of a precipitate
Journal entry
• Draw a diagram to represent the particles of the substances in the solutions before mixing and after mixing (after the precipitate has formed).
QUESTION: Did the chemical reaction affect the mass?  Did the change in the state of matter affect the mass?
